Asia Business Group Turns 50

Dear Asia Business Group Members,

To all those affected by recent typhoons and earthquakes, know that our hearts are with you. Across the globe we wish you safety and good health.

On the east coast of the USA, summer has arrived. It’s getting hot in Washington DC.

While our global economy continues to struggle, we know from experience that the business outlook will improve. But in this case, sooner is better than later. Don’t you agree?

In case you didn’t notice, Asia Business Group now has 50 members. That’s impressive growth for 2009.

ABG is YOUR group. And every member of ABG has friends and colleagues. So, when you contact group members, don’t forget that this is really a large, extended family.

I invite you to contact other group members. You’ll find people who share your interests, and maybe find some people who can help with your business goals.

Don’t be shy about contacting other members--- that’s why we joined ABG.

If you have questions
If you are seeking contacts or products
If you want to offer your expertise
If you want to share advice

Post your comments and let other ABG members hear from you.

And tell your colleagues to join ABG. The larger we grow, the more valuable ABG becomes for all of us.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Michael

Dear All

I am currently in the process of developing CSR programs for SMEs in China. Based on my research and initial investigations, I have found following areas around which CSR programs can be built upon. For your reference I have added some of the key issues

Workforce retention/development : In initial phase manufacturing assests can be vital components to steer your growth but as you grow the organization capabilities will have to developed. However most of the SMEs in China dont have well written job descriptions, no clear path for growth as well little feedback or appreciation provided.

Fair treatment in the workplace
Lots of SME's, especially in low end manufacturing, are struggling to meet the rather strict requirements of China's labor law. Training should focus on how to leverage the extra cost in salary, social benefits and tax into employee retention and recruitment tools, clever ways to keep salaries low while still incentivizing employees and most importantly marketing and communication tools to transfer some of the higher cost to the customer

Environment
This issue is twofold, first, in the form of electricity and water consumption, CSR programs in the environment lead to direct cost cuts. Examples include: recycling of water, rainwater collection, shower and other water use facility design (expecially in production), coheating on site (for larger facilities), consumption monitoring, proactive maintenance, centralised systems, building design, on-site alternative energy, energy saving industrial equipment. The second issue is in compliance, where the growing strength of environmental protection bureaus, awareness from local populations about the impact of pollution, etc, which are all risks.

Cost benefit analysis of CSR for SMEs
How to manage your resources in an ethical manner, especially in tough times?
How will ethical ways of production/supply help SMEs in negotiating fair price from their buyers?
What kind of tools/training aides would help them improve upon their turnaround time as well as add to their overall growth?

Will appreciate your thoughts on the points listed above as well as other CSR programs.

Fiona Q asked about "outplacement" on Asia Business Group's forum. Let's answer her request... What is Outplacement?
Outplacement is job placement assistance and programs administered by organizations implementing downsizing or other staff reductions. Although actual outplacement activities vary from one organization to another, depending on their needs and capabilities, essential activities usually include career and personal counseling, and office space with secretarial assistance and use of telephone and fax. Some organizations sponsor job fairs and advertise their available employees. The purpose of outplacement activities is to assist separated employees in coping with the pressures of termination while helping them to seek new employers.
Can anyone add to this answer?
Does anyone have outplacement experience?
Is it only used by large organizations?
Do you think outplacement services really help?
Please share your opinion...
