A New Service for Life Members: Personalized Communication Coaching.

I want to help you become a more powerful communicator: clear, confident and persuasive.

Like the two students from Stanford who pitched an investor on their concept of search. A few minutes into the presentation the investor apologized for having to go to another meeting. He then wrote them a check. Google was on its way.

When you study Google's strategy, think about Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The co-founders of Google, then in their early twenties, offered investors more than algorithms. Th… Continue

Currently I don't host online business networking but I'm looking into including it for the new year. No one likes schlepping, especially in the cold of winter.

Cheers, Ilana

Hi Michael,

Performance marketing is also known as affiliate marketing. It's an alternative to selling impression inventory on a web site to banner ads. A pro is there is next to no cost to entry, a con is payment is based on commission. So if you know how to sell you can do well in the industry.

As with any industry, we find ourselves with layoffs and cutbacks as well. Customers are looking for rate reductions from their carriers, as the volume of freight declines. The money has to come from somewhere, so they expect it to come from the carriers. The industry itself is still strong, but it is always being managed to create that next customer and put more back to the bottom line.

Managed services is a fairly new term in the IT field to describe outsourcing. In some ways it is a new name for an old concept and in other ways it has some differences. Typically, we are looking at a hybrid model where the company owns the equipment and the service provider operates and manages the equipment. However, the term is broad enough that it can include running a help desk for an IT organization. I focus mostly on network-based services (LAN, WAN private networks, virtual private networks etc), and will be branching out into security, call centers and voice.

Thank you for the question Michael. Here is our thinking and experience.

It helps if the software is a specialty (limited interest) and the expertise is rare, and even better if the technology is boring.

You need to be careful that you do not co-mingle open source with proprietary code. Having said that, even in open source there are opportunities. Linux is open source yet companies are still making money distributing it, supporting it, etc. Open source is not free, after all!

The focus has to be on making your customers successful rather than just providing code. Quality and support needs to be second to none. In our case, we do not release code with known bugs and a tech support call/email stops other development until the user is serviced.

Partnering is critical in my mind. The more complimentary the partners are, the more rewarding is the relationship.

I am not sure about the Google issue. Google is our friend :) Related to this, the business needs to identity their prospects and determine the most cost effective way to reach them. Pretty standard stuff, but it is a critical success factor.

I also always remember that Frank Purdue took a commodity and differentiated it.

There is a smattering of thoughts. Probably no surprises except...a small software company can be successful in today's market :)
