Today's New York Times front page story (Thursday, May 28, 2009) is about the razing of the ancient Old City section of Kashgar, China a centuries-old cultural epicenter for Silk Road traders. The area is the "best-preserved example of Islamic-city architecture in Central Asia," not only according to the NYT, but I also visited the area in 1995 to haggle with traders over carpets, trinkets and a camel.
